Power Rangers Samurai/Super Samurai (recap, review, and critique)

edited December 2012 in General Discussion
The last 2 years have been something. About a few years ago, we were told that PRRPM was the end of the Power Rangers. When the last episode ended, we said our goodbyes, but then, 1 year later, the Power Rangers returned in the form of Power Rangers Samurai. For 2 years, we watched them battle the Nighlok. Now that the Samurai Rangers have finally defeated the Nighlok, on this day (12-8-12), it’s time to recap the whole 2 seasons of Power Rangers Samurai.

POWER RANGERS SAMURAI

Master Xandred had risen from the depths of the Sanzu River with plans for vengeance and world domination. Jayden had to call forth Kevin, Mike, Emily, and Mia to join him and become POWER RANGERS SAMURAI

After the Samurai Rangers made their debut, a familiar face appears and a new one is met.

The Rangers fought hard to defeat Xandred, Octoroo, and Dayu, but trouble appeared in the form of the cursed half-human, half-Nighlok named Deker, who wanted nothing more than to find a worthy opponent and have the ultimate duel.

The Power Rangers began to grow in strength as more and more Zords were unlocked.

With the Beetle, Swordfish, and Tiger zords in their arsenal, the Samurai Rangers gained some new Megazord powers.

With Deker’s mentioning of the Sealing Symbol, Xandred made his return quite clear to the Rangers.

Mentor Ji revealed to the Rangers the nature of the Sealing Symbol.

Master Xandred’s irritation grew more and more with each failure, so the Nighloks set out to get the Sealing Symbol and destroy the only one who could use it. This was the time when a new hero needed to make his “golden” debut. That hero came in the form of a fisherman named Antonio, a childhood friend of Jayden.

In addition to the Gold Ranger, many other zords and weapons were unlocked, and the Rangers were able to stand a better chance against the Nighlok. Meanwhile, things were heating up. Master Xandred started growing tired of Deker.

To make matters worse, the Sanzu River started seeping into our world. This called for the Rangers to bring out the unfinished Black Box.

Dayu was ordered to destroy Deker, but was unable to do because something deep within kept her from doing so. In response, Xandred burned Dayu’s beloved Harmonium. She escaped the Netherworld with a nighlok named Rhinosnorus on her trail. Xandred orders Rhinosnorus to put Dayu into her worst Nightmare. In the process, Mia (who was near Dayu), is also put under the dream spell, gets pulled in Dayu’s nightmare, and makes a surprising discovery behind Dayu and Deker.

Dayu continues to go on her own way, refusing help from the Rangers, and Rhinosnorus is destroyed by the Rangers. Deker takes this chance to force Jayden to have the Ultimate Duel with Deker.

We learn that in the Nighlok’s Spirit World, the defeated Nighloks are still suffering from their defeats at the hands of the Samurai Rangers.

With all that fighting for the year, the Rangers celebrated Christmas and recalled the time they had.

  • POWER RANGERS SUPER SAMURAI

After the New Year began, the Rangers had more trouble to deal with. The Sanzu River started seeping in their world even more, and the Nighlok were becoming stronger. To counteract the Nighlok, Antonio completed the Black Box which allowed the Power Rangers Samurai to become POWER RANGER SUPER SAMURAI

Not only were the Rangers’ powers growing, but so were the feelings between Mike and Emily. They were given the chance to fight the Nighlok by themselves when a nighlok named Switchbeast trapped all the Rangers, except Mike and Emily, in inanimate objects.

Indeed the Rangers were getting stronger, but they would soon meet a new evil with more power than any Nighlok they have ever faced. An evil Nighlok named Serrator awoke and rose from the bottom of the Sanzu River. This new Nighlok was an old face from Dayu and Deker’s past and has quite a sharp hand in Dayu and Deker’s Nighlok origin.

The Rangers were saved in their 1st battle with Serrator, by Antonio and a new zord called The Light Zord.

The Light Zord had a hidden surprise inside. It was the Shark Disc which gave the Rangers some more power.

The Shark Disc also came with the Shark Zord, which could combine with the Samurai Megazord for a new combo.

Soon, the very 1st Samurai zord, the Bull Zord, was unleashed and tamed by the Rangers, with a little help from a boy named Cody. The Bull Zord also came with powers of the ancient Grand Shogun. The new powers allowed the Power Rangers to gain Shogun Mode.

All these new powers would be needed for Serrator was planning something sneaky. He rounded up a vengeful Dayu and Deker, and promised to fix their broken items in exchange for their service.

Like most Power Ranger seasons, it isn’t long before previous Rangers are needed again. In the apocalyptic dimnesion of Power Rangers RPM, one of the Venjix Virus’s robots, named Professor Cog, escapes to the Samurai Rangers’ dimension (which has been protected by MMPR-PRJF) and finds Master Xandred hoping to from an alliance. The Samurai Rangers received help in the form of Scott Truman, the Red RPM Ranger. Professor Cog sent Kevin, Mike, Emily, Mia and Antonio to the RPM world, and tried to destroy the 2 Red Rangers with special bullets that would make them destroy each other. With this, the Clash of the Red Rangers happened.

The teamed-up Rangers destroyed Professor Cog and Xandred’s huge army, and the team-up was over. Ranger Red went back to his world, but not before wishing Mike something pretty cool.

After dealing with lazer-firing robots, Xandred’s army developed their own blasters. The Rangers were able to add blasters to their arsenal as well. They had Cody to thank for the new Bull-zooka.

Serrator’s deception was finally discovered and things begun to spiral out of control.

With Master Xandred at the bottom of the Sanzu River, Serrator set his plan in motion. Serrator’s plan: cause misery at specific points that make a straight line, have Deker use Urumasa to slice a rock in the middle of the path and open a crack that will flood Earth quickly and allow Serrator to rule Earth and the Netherworld. The fate of Earth rested in Deker’s hands.

With Serrator’s plan completely ruined, the final battle with Serrator began.

With Serrator finally gone, Octoroo and Dayu began attacking Earth until Xandred would regain his full strength. They hope to eliminate Jayden, but they got a surprise, which also came in red. Jayden’s big sister, Lauren, arrived.

Lauren’s past is revealed. Jayden and Lauren’s father sent Lauren away to master the Sealing Symbol, while Jayden would lead the team, at least until Lauren arrived.

While the Rangers continued to fight the Nighlok, Jayden found something that needed to be done: fight Deker and defeat him once and for all. After a whole day of fighting, it all came down to one last event: the survival of one warrior and the end of one warrior.

The Ranger’s finally convinced Jayden to return, and just in time. Deker’s demise finally made Dayu snap and she decided to do the unthinkable: play one more tune to bring back Master Xandred.

Xandred had risen again, but Dayu had finally freed herself of her sadness. Xandred made a decision and Dayu’s fate was sealed.

Xandred was more powerful than last time, so the Rangers fought hard to defeat him. The Rangers distracted Xandred while Lauren performed the Sealing Symbol.

Xandred’s absorption of Dayu has given him what was left of Dayu’s humanity. He became immune to the Sealing Symbol, and he could never dry out. Lauren gave Jayden back his leadership and he began plotting a new way to defeat Master Xandred.

The Rangers fought strong, but the Shiba Fire Disc broke, and Xandred wasn’t weakened enough, so Lauren made another Shiba Fire Disc for them to use. The Rangers confronted Master Xandred and Jayden powered up for one more fight with Xandred.

Just when the Samurai Rangers thought it was over, Xandred reminded the Rangers that all Nighloks have 2 lives. The Rangers fight Xandred in the Megazord, but he is still powerful. Jayden realizes that there is only one way to beat the “Lord of all Nighlok”

With Xandred destroyed, his ship sinks with Octoroo still onboard. With the Nighlok finally defeated, everything comes down to these final scenes. Jayden helps us end this season with a familiar tune that will never be forgotten by Power Ranger fans.

After 2 years of fighting the Nighlok, the day has finally come. The Samurai Rangers have finally beat the Nighlok. On this day, December 8, 2012, the Samurai Rangers finally won. They can finally do what they want to do. Now, we must say “goodbye” to them. We await the day when you are needed again. Goodbye, Samurai Rangers.

  • I felt that Power Rangers Samurai/Super Samurai could have been better, but it was actually kind of good. It was a bit of a darker than most seasons, but it still its great moments. It's a shame the episodes were disorganized, but I managed to put the pieces together. I hear that lots of people liked PRS/PRSS. I'm definitely gonna watch all of it over again from the beginning. Perhaps a 2nd time around will be great. If anyone else wants to see it from the beginning, here's a link to my Episode Discussion.

    Here's a little something to commemorate PRS/PRSS
  • Hopefully Megaforce will be just as good as Samurai was.
  • No @vgiannell5. let's hope it will be better. This season was a bit good, but it could have been better. They could have changed the origins a bit. The Samurai Rangers' origin destroys the whole "MMPR being Earth's 1st team of Rangers" thing since it's stated that there have been Samurai Rangers for centuries. I would have liked it more if the previous Samurai Rangers were just Samurai's with Symbol Powers and that these guys would have been the 1st Samurai's to morph into Power Rangers, like they did with PRJF and the Pai Zhug warriors.
